Rafa Benitez has revealed why Issac Hayden and Jack Colback were left out of his squad against Burton Albion.
The midfield pair were not involved in Newcastle United's 1-0 win over Nigel Clough's side at St James's Park on Wednesday night.
Hayden had made his comeback from ankle surgery four days earlier, while Colback has been a regular starter for the Championship leaders in recent months.
And United manager Benitez has explained their absence.
“Jack Coback was feeling bad during the (Tuesday) night – a lot of fever – and he was not available.
“Isaac Hayden was a little bit tired after the last game (against Wigan), and so we didn’t want to take any risks.”
Benitez is assessing Hayden and Colback ahead of tomorrow evening's game against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Asked if they would be available, he said: “We will see the resolution of Jack, obviously.
"But I think Hayden could be fine (after) a couple of days to treat him and to work with him.”
Meanwhile, defender Jamie Sterry has returned to training after recovering from groin surgery.
The 21-year-old said on Twitter: "Great to be back training."
Team-mate Rob Elliot replied to Sterry's tweet and jokingly accused him of "some disgraceful behaviour" against Dwight Gayle on the training field.
