Yoan Gouffran could be back for Newcastle United's relegation run-in.
The forward has been sidelined since limping out of last month's defeat against Stoke City.
Gouffran was given a surprise recall by then-head coach Steve McClaren at the Britannia Stadium on March 2 for what turned out to be his penultimate match in charge.
But the former France Under-21 international was forced off late in the game, which Newcastle lost 1-0, with a muscle injury.
United manager Rafa Benitez welcomed back defender Kevin Mbabu from a thigh injury last weekend, and Gouffran is now close to a return.
"We Mbabu coming back, that is good news," said Benitez. "Gouffran is closer, so we have some players getting closer.
"At least we have Mbabu, who is a defender and can help with the defender crisis."
Second-bottom Newcastle take on Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace at St James's Park on Saturday knowing a win could be enough to lift them out of the Premier League's relegation zone.
