Rafa Benitez says Jesus Gamez is pushing to be part of Newcastle United’s Championship challenge – but the defender will NOT be involved at Ashton Gate today.

Gamez, signed from Atletico Madrid this summer, has not featured in the club’s first three league games.

I want to be sure that he’s fine, that he understands what we’re looking for and that the team is all settled. He’s closer, but still he will not be involved.

And the 31-year-old right-back – who can play across the back four – is not in the squad for this afternoon’s match against Bristol City.

United manager Benitez feels Gamez will take time to adjust to English football, having spent his entire career in Spain.

Asked about Gamez, Benitez said: “He’s training.

“He had a little problem, but he’s training and he’s pushing himself.

“I want to be sure that he’s fine.

“I don’t want to put him in a position where he goes out there and, like with the goalkeeper (Matz Sels, signed from Belgian club Gent), it will take him time to settle down in a new league, new intensity.

“I want to be sure that he’s fine, that he understands what we’re looking for and that the team is all settled.

“He’s closer, but still he will not be involved.”
