NEWCASTLE United’s reserves threw away a three-goal lead at Whitley Park this afternoon – and lost 5-4.

And West Ham United’s dramatic comeback owed everything to Elliot Lee, the son of former Newcastle midfielder Rob.

Lee – who made his Premier League debut at the weekend – scored a hat-trick for the visitors.

Jonathyn Quinn had given Willie Donachie’s side a commanding early lead with a 10-minute hat-trick. Quinn opened the scoring in the third minute with a close-range effort.

Two minutes later a ball from Gael Bigirimana was hooked into the net by Quinn, and the 17-year-old’s third came from a lob from the edge of the box.

West Ham pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 37th minute. Lee netted the spot kick, awarded against debutant Ben Drennan, who fouled Kieran Sadlier.

Lee netted another before the break, and Dylan Tombides levelled the scores after the break.

George Moncur put West Ham ahead, and Lee netted another penalty to make it 5-3.

Substitute Rolando Aarons pulled a goal back for Newcastle – who were captained by Curtis Good – in the 89th minute.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Alnwick, Satka, Gillesphey (Roberts, 75), Drennan (Aarons, 46), Streete, Good, Olley, Bigirimana, Quinn, Amalfitano (Smith, 19), Gilliead. Subs not used: Mitchell, Aird.
