Same old, same old?

JUST three days ago, Andy Carroll was the hero for Newcastle United.

In fact, Carroll's more than played is part on the pitch, his latest goal his 15th of the season.

Yet this morning, Carroll – and his club – were making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Those fans who mobbed Carroll at Ashton Gate will no doubt have thought the days of infighting, on the field and off it, were behind a club which has based its success in the Championship on team spirit.

Sadly, it appears not.

And already there's a weariness among supporters at the revelations of an alleged incident involving Carroll which has, it seems, left Steven Taylor with a suspected broken jaw.

After all, they've seen it all before.

The punches traded by Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer come to mind, as does the chair Craig Bellamy flung at John Carver. I could go on.

Carroll's equaliser at Bristol City on Saturday had edged the club that little bit closer to promotion, and wins against Doncaster Rovers tonight, and Nottingham Forest on Monday, would push them even nearer the finish line.

However, the 3,200 away fans at the Keepmoat Stadium will be taking nothing for granted now, and who could blame them?

The events of the past few days have the potential to undermine all the good work that's gone on up to now, for which the players, quite properly, have been given huge credit.

The manager, Chris Hughton, has also been rightly lauded for the job he's done in trying circumstances.

Yet he'll know any United manager is just a couple of games away from a crisis. He just has ask the manager who coined he saying – Graeme Souness.

And Newcastle, quite simply, can't afford to fail in their next two fixtures.
