Santon eyes Magpies debut

ITALIAN JOB ... Davide Santon

ITALIAN JOB ... Davide Santon

DAVIDE Santon made a successful comeback from injury – and edged closer to his Newcastle United debut in Wales last night.

The 20-year-old’s return to fitness is set to intensify competition for places in defence.

Santon played 90 minutes for the club’s reserves in their 5-3 win away to Swansea City last night.

The full-back impressed going forward at the Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli in a rollercoaster game for Peter Beardsley’s side, and could be involved against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday.

Santon, signed from Inter Milan for £5m last month, was sidelined by a knee problem soon after arriving on Tyneside, and his return gives manager Alan Pardew another selection headache.

“We’re excited by Davide – he’ll add something to the squad,” said assistant manager John Carver.

The Swansea win means Beardsley’s second string – like the first team – are unbeaten so far this season.

Michael Richardson, Shane Ferguson and Dan Gosling sent Newcastle into a 3-0 lead inside the first 22 minutes, but the home side pulled two goals back before the break through Luke Moore and Stephen Dobbie.

Dobbie levelled after the interval, only for Nile Ranger to win and convert a penalty a minute later.

And Greg McDermott sealed all three points for United six minutes into the second half.
