SOUTH Tynesider Lee Paul Scroggins netted against Newcastle United’s Europa League opponents Metalist Kharkiv.

The Ukrainian side were held to a 1-1 draw at Hillheads by a battling Whitley Bay yesterday.

Metalist – who take on Newcastle at St James’s Park on Thursday night in the first leg of a Round of 32 tie – arranged the game to top up their players’ fitness, with their league on a winter break.

Scroggins, pictured, from South Shields, put Whitley Bay ahead in the first half, but Brazilian Cleiton Xavier levelled before the break.

After the game, Jarrow striker Paul Chow, a Newcastle season-ticket holder, praised the support at Hillheads on social networking site Twitter.

Chow tweeted: “Whitley Bay remain unbeaten in Europe this season. Really enjoyable game to be involved in. Cheers for the support.”

Meanwhile, teenage defender Remie Streete, from South Shields, is in United’s squad for the Viareggio Cup in Italy.

Newcastle will face AC Milan, Empoli and a representative Under-17 side from Congo in the group stage of the prestigious tournament, which features 43 teams.

Streete, 18, is fit again after recovering from the hamstring problem he suffered on his return from a serious ankle injury.
