Shay Given says Mike Ashley must back Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez ‘heavily’ in the transfer market this summer.
The former Magpies goalkeeper believes it could be a crucial period for the club as they look to prosper in the Premier League after their promotion.
Ashley has already promised that Benitez will be given ‘every last penny’ as the Spanish manager looks to build a squad capable of taking on the big boys.
Ex-Toon shot-stopper Given says it will be interesting to see how much money will be available to Benitez, with Newcastle continuing to be linked with a host of signings, including Eliaquim Mangala at another of his old clubs, Manchester City.
“There’s talk of them having X amount of pounds to spend in the summer and a lot of players coming in,” said Given.
“Mangala has been linked with a move to Newcastle and I think it will be an interesting summer up there.
“It will be interesting to see if Mike Ashley backs Benitez and they go heavy in the transfer market because they need to strengthen and to stay in the Premier League.”
Given played 354 games for the Magpies before leaving to join City in 2009. If anyone is qualified to comment on the goalkeeping situation at St James’s Park, it’s him.
Ex-Liverpool man Pepe Reina has been linked with a surprise reunion with Benitez, but Given insists, in Tim Krul, Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Matz Sels, the goalkeeping department is one area that’s strong.
“Pepe Reina has got a relationship with Rafa Benitez, so you can see the link there,” he told Talksport.
“But Newcastle have got four or five goalkeepers who can play in the Premier League.
“It will be interesting to see if anything happens and it will be interesting to see what happens at Newcastle, personally. They are my old club and I spent a lot of time there.”
