Vurnon Anita was on target in a 2-0 win for Newcastle United at Roots Hall tonight.
The midfielder scored against Southend United with a fine 20-yard strike early in the second half.
Newcastle, unbeaten so far in pre-season, wrap up their warm-up campaign with a home game against Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday.
And Yoan Gouffran added a second goal late in the game, which saw defender Grant Hanley, signed from Blackburn Rovers last week, made his debut for the club.
But midfielder Cheick Tiote was not at Roots Hall amid talks over a £4m-a-year move to Abu Dhabi club Al Jazira Club.
United manager Benitez handed Karl Darlow his first pre-season start against Phil Brown's League One side, who were missing injured former Newcastle striker Nile Ranger.
The goalkeeper had little to do in a first half dominated by United, though Benitez's side couldn't make their possession and chances count.
That changed after the break when Anita, playing on the right side of midfield, seized on a loose ball and struck a fine shot past Oxley.
Hanley replaced Chancel Mbemba in the 63rd minute, and forward Gouffran netted 12 minutes from time.
Darlow pulled off a superb save to deny David Mooney in the last minute of the match.
