Manquillo twisted his ankle “badly” in Newcastle United's 3-2 win over Southampton earlier this month – and it was feared that the defender would not play against until April. However, Bruce – who also lost Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar in the same game – says Manquillo has “responded well” to treatment.

“The one who looks better is Manquillo,” said United’s head coach. “He twisted his ankle badly, but has responded very well to treatment.”

Manquillo’s injury – and the departure of DeAndre Yedlin earlier this month – has left Bruce with Emil Krafth as his only recognised right-back.

Bruce said after Monday night’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea that he didn’t regret allowing Yedlin to leave for Galatasaray on a free transfer. Bruce said: "Look, he was out of contract, and we had three right-backs. We had to make way for somebody else to come in. I’ve got no regrets.”
