The Mariners were pegged back in second half stoppage time by Morpeth Town, eventually having to settle for a 1-1 draw, which leaves them needing one win from their final two games.

The first of those is tomorrow night at Ashington, when Shields will hope to finish off the job.

After a crowd of more than 2,000 packed into Mariners Park on Saturday, it appears certain Shields will enjoy a huge travelling support at the next two matches.

After Saturday’s game, supporter Tony Bengtsson posted on Twitter: “An absolutely unbelievable record-busting winning run stands at 32 – phenomenal. One win and we’ve won the league!”
