South Shields have had to put the Champagne on ice, as Morpeth Town rescued a last-gasp point which took the Northern League Division One title race to the final week of the season.

A stoppage time effort from Mark Davison cancelled out Carl Finnigan’s opener in a 1-1 draw at Mariners Park, as the hosts missed the chance to be crowned champions on home turf.

Instead, they will have to wait until Tuesday night’s trip to Ashington, where a win will complete the job and tick of the first trophy in Shields’ quest for the quadruple.

The clash got off to the perfect start with Finnigan netting his 28th of the campaign from close range with a smart finish.

And at that point, the hosts looked like extending their unofficial world record run of 32 wins on the bounce.

But, with time ticking away, Town pounced, Davison rising highest at the back stick to end a remarkable sequence of results for the Mariners.
