South Shields FC striker Warren Byrne’s incredible goal at the weekend is continuing to cause a stir internationally after it was nominated for an award in America.

CNN – which is one of the biggest news channels in the USA and is available to over 96million households – has chosen Byrne’s strike against Tow Law on Saturday as one of its top four goals of the week.

He is up against FC Cincinnati forward Sean Okoli, Jordan Blondel, of US Avranches, and Walter Ayovi, of Monterrey.

Within minutes of the competition being posted on Twitter, votes started to flood in for 33-year-old Byrne.

After an hour, more than 100 votes had been cast, with 88% of them for the South Shields frontman.

Byrne – who joined the Mariners last summer and has made a habit of scoring sensational goals this season – attracted global headlines following his strike, which has now been viewed more than 3.5million times and featured on national TV.

He flicked the ball up with his right foot, hooked it over his head and then smashed in an incredible left foot volley for his 29th goal of the season.
