INTER MILAN forward Ricky Alvarez is edging closer to completing his loan move to Sunderland.
The Black Cats approached the Serie A giants for Alvarez earlier this week, to solve the left-sided forward role which has remained vacant due to the pursuit of Liverpool’s Fabio Borini dragging on without a resolution.
Argentine international Alvarez underwent a medical at the Academy of Light last night and is now set to agree a season-long loan move to the Stadium of Light, with the option of a permanent transfer next summer.
The capture of the 26-year-old is something of a coup for Sunderland, even if Alvarez has had a reputation for inconsistency during his time in Italy, with Monaco and Atletico Madrid both chasing him this summer.
Alvarez’s arrival will not necessarily spend the end of Sunderland’s interest in Borini, with Gus Poyet still eager to re-sign the Italian on a season-long loan.
But with the capture of Borini now only an outside bet, it eases the pressure on the Black Cats, who are also looking to strengthen their defensive option before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.
