Bent 'goal' is taken off him

DARREN Bent has missed out on a ninth goal of the season after the Barclays Premier League's Dubious Goals Committee came down against him.

Bent 'scored' Sunderland's last goal in the 5-2 win over Wolves at the Stadium of Light in September, his shot deflected in off defender Michael Mancienne.

Manager Steve Bruce said immediately afterwards that the goal should be credited to Bent: "I can't see the defender wanting to claim it!" he mused.

But after meeting to discuss all the contested incidents around the league and viewing video evidence, the committee have designated the goal as a Mancienne own goal.

Bent has scored eight goals since his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in a 10m move in the summer – a ninth would have drawn the striker level with Chelsea's Didier Drogba, and put him just one goal behind the Premier League's leading marksman, Liverpool's Fernando Torres.

Meanwhile Manchester United's injury-time equaliser against Sunderland at Old Trafford has been unsurprisingly designated an Anton Ferdinand own goal – the shot was missing the target completely before the Sunderland defender deflected it in.

The decisions of the committee in full are:

1) Manchester United's third goal against Wigan Athletic on August 22 has been confirmed as a Wayne Rooney goal.

2) Burnley's goal against Everton on August 23 has been confirmed as a Wade Elliott goal.

3) Aston Villa's first goal against Liverpool on August 24 has been confirmed as an own goal (Lucas Leiva).

4) Manchester City's first goal against Arsenal on September 12 has been confirmed as a Micah Richards goal.

5) Fulham's first goal against Everton on September 13 has been confirmed as a Paul Konchesky goal.

6) Manchester United's second goal against Manchester City on September 20 has been confirmed as a Darren Fletcher goal.

7) Sunderland's fifth goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 27 has been confirmed as an own goal (Michael Mancienne).

8) Manchester United's second goal against Sunderland on October 3 has been confirmed as an own goal (Anton Ferdinand).

9) Blackburn Rovers' second goal against Arsenal on October 4 has been confirmed as a David Dunn goal.

10) West Ham United's second goal against Fulham on October 4 has been confirmed as a Junior Stanislas goal.
