DONE DEAL: Sunderland target completes Wigan return

A LATIC AGAIN ... Paul Scharner has returned to Wigan on loan for the rest of the season.

A LATIC AGAIN ... Paul Scharner has returned to Wigan on loan for the rest of the season.

WIGAN Athletic have confirmed the signing of midfielder Paul Scharner on loan from German side Hamburg until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to Sunderland, but has opted to re-join the club he represented between 2006 and 2010.

Scharner was a fans’ favourite during his first spell at the DW Stadium, and will now hope to replicate the form which earned him a move to West Bromwich Albion in 2010.

He will wear the No 33 shirt for the Latics, and could make his second debut for the club in their crucial relegation battle with Southampton on Saturday.

Scharner becomes Wigan’s fourth signing of the month, with the Latics already capturing Roger Espinoza, Angelo Henriquez and Joel Robles.

The versatile Austrian had fallen out of favour at Hamburg and was desperate for a return to the Premier League.

He told Wigan’s official website: “It really is fantastic to be back.

“Wigan will always have a big place in my heart, so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something really special for me.”

Manager Martinez added: “We know Paul Scharner very well, he knows the club and he knows what we want to do. It is a romantic return to Wigan.”
