FUTURE'S IN SAFE HANDS ... Sunderland youngster Jordan Pickford.

  • by CHRIS YOUNG

SUNDERLAND rookie keeper Jordan Pickford has a “big future” ahead of him, according to Darlington boss Craig Liddle, who has had him on loan.

Liddle said of the 18-year-old: “He was bossing the penalty area on Tuesday and that’s what we wanted him to do.

“He’s become more and more confident. I’ve known him for a lot of years, since he was in the under-12s at Sunderland I think and he’s got a bright future.”

n Craig Gordon was unable to help Sunderland’s reserves reach the Central League Cup for a second successive year.

Scotland keeper Gordon played the full 90 minutes for the Black Cats yesterday in a 3-2 defeat at Derby County’s Pride Park but could not prevent the holders falling out of the competition.

Adam Mitchell scored early on, but Derby scored three times before Mikael Mandron scored late to give Sunderland hope.

However, they could not find an equaliser.
