Jermain Defoe returns to the Sunderland side for today's visit of Crystal Palace to the Stadium of Light.

Defoe missed the 2-1 EFL Cup win over QPR after taking a kick to the calf but he is back in the starting line-up for the game against Alan Pardew's Palace.

The only change from the team that got beat 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur last week is the return of Patrick van Aanholt to league action.

The Dutch left-back was a late withdrawal for the game at White Hart Lane after a heart scare but did play the full 90 minutes against QPR.

John O'Shea is on the bench, while summer signing Victor Anichebe is among the Sunderland subs for the first time since arriving as a free agent.
