Hebburn beaten after a bright start

HEBBURN suffered defeat in their Northumberland League Division One match against Stobswood.

Hebburn got off to a bright start with Gary Taylor and fellow opener Ian Younger playing some sparkling shots.

The pair put on 57 for the first wicket before Younger (27) was caught and bowled.

Taylor then went lbw for 30 to give Stobswood a double breakthrough.

The visitors grew in confidence and when Watson removed both Aidan and Brian Berry in quick succession Hebburn were in trouble.

Lee Tatum led the Hebburn fightback with Lee Buglass. Both were in good touch after centuries for the seconds last week.

Tatum (36) looked assured until Watson managed to get one to sneak through his defences.

Buglass (23) similarly looked good until edging behind to Collam.

Wickets were falling, but Hebburn were still on the way to posting a competitive total.

Late order runs from Hassan Shaik (19) and Brendan Abbott (17) got Hebburn up to 200 all out.

The Tyne Tunnel 2-sponsored side knew that they would have to pick up wickets regularly to protect their total and they had the perfect start.

Hassan Shaik picked up three early victims and Ian Younger one as Stobswood limped to 51-4.

However, the visitors fought back, with Winfield (41) and Collam (43) putting on 89 for the fifth wicket.

Hebburn brought on Gary Taylor, who got two quick wickets, and when Younger got his second of the day Stobswood were wobbling seven down.

However, Stobswood held their nerve though as Appleby and Beverley put on an edgy 20 for the eighth wicket to seal the game for the visitors.

Hebburn captain Younger said: "We kept fighting all the way and put Stobswood under real pressure at the end of the game.

"If one of our batsmen who were set had gone on to get 50 it may well have been too much for them to chase."
