Hebburn suffer at hands of Heaton
HEBBURN suffered defeat in their Northumberland League Division One match against Heaton Park CC, writes BRIAN McVITTIE.
Everything started well for Hebburn with Mark Carmichael and Aidan Berry claiming two wickets apiece in the opening 12 overs to leave Park on 40-4 after some excellent early bowling.
However, the Heaton middle order really fired and Malik (101) and Rahim (70) put on 150 for the fifth wicket.
This was a hammer blow for Hebburn, but after the partnership was broken, they continued to take wickets.
Aidan Berry (4-50) and Mark Carmichael (4-47) got rid of the tail cheaply. When Gary Taylor removed centurion Malik, the hosts were all out for 233.
In reply, the Tyne Tunnel 20-sponsored side looked good with captain Ian Younger (35) and Aidan Berry (38) at the crease as they took the score up to 85-2.
However, once they went, there was very little resistance provided from the Hebburn batsmen as they slumped to 135 all out with Kamran Khan bagging (6-18).
The Second XI bounced back after last week's defeat against Blyth to beat Monkseaton by nine wickets.
Rhys Warburtons bowled 10 overs for a miserly 17 runs, while Lee Buglass, pictured, conceded just 10 runs off his 10 overs as the visitors struggled to make much progress with the bat.
With just 35 runs on the board after 20 overs, the attempted acceleration – when it came – caused a dramatic collapse.
Graeme Taylor (4-17) and Harry Graves (4-12) were the chief tormentors. Jordan Stephenson (2-2) wrapped up the innings as the Monks were all out for 70.
In reply, Hebburn approached their task aggressively with Brian McVittie and Marcello Cioffi putting on 49 for the first wicket until McVittie (32) was bowled. Cioffi went on to make 32 not out as Hebburn won by nine wickets.
Captain Harry Graves said: "The whole team was excellent in the field today, backing up our bowlers, which created a lot of pressure on the batsmen."
