Injured Toon duo may be fit for Villa

CHRIS Hughton is hopeful Danny Guthrie and Peter Lovenkrands will be back for Newcastle United's home opener at Aston Villa.

Midfielder Guthrie and striker Lovenkrands sat out last night's 3-0 defeat at Manchester United, despite travelling to Old Trafford with their team-mates.

"Danny felt his knee two days ago, and Peter felt his groin the day before the game," Hughton told the Gazette.

"They both travelled, and we expected both of them to be fit. It was a bit of a blow not to have them available, but the fact that they were very close means we're very hopeful they'll both be available."

As for striker Leon Best, sidelined with an ankle problem suffered in training, Hughton won't yet put a timescale on his return to action.

"We're still assessing that one (Best), and I'm quite sure we'll make everybody aware when we know," added Hughton.
