South Shields travel to Sedgefield this weekend knowing they must pick up at least one victory, as a minimum, from their remaining three league games to edge away from danger.

The Hedworth Hall sponsored team currently sit only three points above the drop zone.

Relegation-threatened Blyth, who sit just below Shields, have two home games and a trip to basement side Seaton Carew remaining, and are odds on to stay up at Shields’ expense.

Shields will be looking to build on last week’s performance against Ponteland in a game which saw the home side score 21 points against arguably one of the better teams in the DN2 league.

The club were dealt a massive double blow early in the week when captain Clayton Fox was ruled out of the game (work commitments) and Matt Bengston is also missing.

Other absentees include Carlos Mut Morei, Daniel Whitelaw, Matty Soroka and Mark Walker, while Matty Stephenson also misses out.

One good point is the welcome return of second row Dan McKay, who will add some steal to the pack. Marcus Colborne is also included in the squad.

Todd Riley and Gary Bates are likely to continue their pairing at No9 and No10.

Despite a large number of casualties, the club are boosted by the welcome return of Tom Brooks to the coaching team for the remainder of the season.

Brooks will take over from current head coach Stuart Robson, who takes time away from the game as his wife is due to give birth to their second child.

With remaining games of Sunderland (home), Winlaton Vulcans (away) and tomorrow’s game, Shields will be looking at this fixture as one they feel they could get something from, epecially with the side beating Sedgefield earlier in the season, albeit by only two points.

Games between the two sides have always been close affairs with results in the past maybe favouring Shields.

However, Sedgefield have had a fantastic first season in DN2 and have secured some outstanding results.

The game is set for a 3pm kick-off at Sedgefield RUFC (TS21 2BY).

South Shields Mariners are also in league action as they welcome Consett III to Brinkburn (3pm).
