Jarrovians too hot for Barnard Castle

JARROVIANS found themselves applying the sunscreen, not the vaseline, as they entertained Barnard Castle seconds on a blisteringly hot day at Lukes Lane on Saturday.

The game, Jarrow's opening league encounter, was played at a blistering pace too, with both sides opting for the open entertaining game.

Due to holiday absences and work commitments several Jarrowmen rose to the rallying call of new captain Brian Shaw, none more so than Gary Archbold senior and Ian Maxwell, who were both magnificent against tough opposition in the front row.

The opening exchanges were fraught, but it was Jarrow who took the lead with a superbly-taken try scored by debutante centre Tom Smith.

However, not to be outdone Castle replied with a converted try to take a 7-5 lead into half-time.

After the break, Castle seized the initiative and scored again to stretch the lead to 14-5.

Jarrow regrouped and began a determined offensive which took the wind out of Castle's sails.

Fly-half Craig Donald began to run the Jarrow show, and gradually wore down Castle's resistance.

The home side grew in stature, and David Berry scored a scorching 60-yard try to give Jarrow hope.

Adam Shorten scored his first try in black and amber to wrest the lead back off Castle.

From this point on Jarrow never looked back, and weren't about to surrender their hard-won lead.

They remained encamped on Castle's 22 for the remainder of the game.

Davey Winthrop almost scored after a superb break from scrum-half Jamie Broadway, but brave Barnard tackling prevented the score by getting hands under the ball and preventing the touch down.

However, Graham Linsley was not to be denied, and, under similar circumstances, the big second row capped a man-of-the-match performance, storming through the ailing defence to give Jarrow a 22-14 first league victory of the campaign.

It was an excellent start to what will hopefully be an entertaining and exciting season.
