Katy skippers England to Scots success
THINGS could hardly have gone better for England women's rugby team's stand-in skipper Katy McLean at the weekend.
The South Shields-born fly-half led England to a comprehensive 51-0 victory in Edinburgh – a result that keeps them on track for Six Nations glory.
It was only the second time that the former Mortimer School pupil had captained her country, and she admitted she thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.
She said: "It was a massive honour for me to captain my country. I was a little bit stressed before the game, but I was delighted with how things went, and with the result.
"I really enjoyed leading the side out. It was a wonderful occasion."
However, she is in no hurry to try to wrestle the armband from full-time captain Catherine Spencer.
"There's a lot of stuff involved with captaining the side, and while it was a great honour and one that I enjoyed, I certainly don't envy her."
McLean kicked two conversions as England romped to victory, but, ever the perfectionist, felt there was still room for improvement in her display.
"I was pleased with my two conversions," she said.
"It wasn't my best kicking performance because it was quite windy, but overall I was happy with how things went during the game.
"The game gave a number of young players a chance to make the step up and show what they could do, and they took that opportunity.
"It was a good win, and a good performance, and now we are looking to carry it on against France this weekend.
"That will be a big game for us and we are all focused on doing well."
England travel to France for their final Six Nations game on Friday, 8pm kick-off.
