Back to reality for Warren Byrne as South Shields face Northallerton trip

Byrne’s stunning goal against Tow Law Town on Saturday has been viewed more than 3.5million times online, and has been featured on TV stations across the globe.

He and Shields will be back in action tonight when they travel to Northallerton Town.

A win for the Mariners would move them to within one more victory of securing the Northern League Division Two title.

However, manager Jon King is certainly not taking Northallerton lightly.

They are one of just five teams to have beaten Shields in the league this season, having triumphed 3-2 at Mariners Park on the opening day.

King said: “They’re all difficult games, but especially this one, because Northallerton have had a good season and did very well against us on the opening day of the season.

“The lads have had a good rest since Saturday’s win at Tow Law, though, and are raring to go.

“We really want another three points to move us a step closer to the title.

“All we can do is win every game that’s in front of us and that’s what we’ve done of late.

“We’ve got promotion wrapped up, but I want us to go out in style and stride over the line with some top performances.”

Byrne, meanwhile, said: “If we can go to Northallerton and win, that will be a big step closer to the title.

“They’re a good side and they beat us on the first day of the season, but we’ve got a totally different side now.

“We’ll go there and hopefully get the three points, but it will be a hard game.”

Kick-off at The Calvert Stadium is at 7.30pm, with Wayne Phillips injured for Shields, and Julio Arca doubtful.

In the Wearside League, meanwhile, Harton and Westoe host Jarrow in a 7.30pm kick-off.

Jarrow have Lea Brand unavailable and Kris Allen injured, while Brodie Simpson serves the last of his three-game suspension.
