Boldon CA rally from two down to lift Shipowners Cup in thrilling final

Boldon CA celebrated in style tonight after lifting the Shipowners' Cup for the first time in 27 years.

But it was a nail-biting finale against Wearside League rivals Leam Rangers, who conceded a two-goal lead and an added time penalty as the hosts edged a 3-2 win.

It looked as if Leam would cause an upset against the favourites when they went two goals up through Alan Mulholland and Chris Lowther.

At that stage, Boldon looked out of it, but Paul Mossa’s men launched a magnificent rally.

Before the interval, they halved the deficit as a defender turned a corner into his own net and, in the second period, substitute Dominic Mossa set up a grandstand finish when he levelled the scores at 2-2.

With extra time looking a distinct possibility, Boldon were awarded a penalty in added time. Adam Bell kept his composure to beat Leam goalkeeper Neil Postlethwaite and send Boldon’s players and fans into raptures.
