FORMER Newcastle United youngster Dennis Knight hit a stunning hat-trick from the bench to help West Auckland to a 4-0 win over South Shields.
Shields had been hoping to keep their hopes of silverware alive by progressing in the Durham Challenge Cup tie.
But after a goalless first half, Knight’s arrival as a 62nd-minute substitute changed the game.
Within 12 minutes, he had opened the scoring, firing into the top corner after an initial effort was blocked, then doubled the lead when he cut in from the right to rifle a left-foot shot past Jak Wells.
Knight, who left Newcastle last year and was on the books of Barnsley until November, completed a 12-minute hat-trick with a far post header, then played a part in setting up Warren Byrne for an injury-time fourth.
