Hebburn's unbeaten run comes to an end

HEBBURN Town's unbeaten run came to an end last night, as they lost 3-0 at Northallerton.

The scoreline was somewhat harsh on Rob Marsden's men, who were aggrieved at the award of a second-half penalty.

The game started off brightly and was end to end, but with both keepers in top form it looked like it would be a long wait for an opening goal.

However, the breakthrough came on 19 minutes, despite the valiant efforts of Hebburn goalkeeper Gary Rogers.

He pulled off two superb saves to deny Carl Chillingsworth and Christian Holliday, but the second save saw the ball bounce back towards the penalty spot, where Chillingsworth gratefully accepted his second chance and headed home.

Town pushed forward looking to get back into the game, but couldn't find a way through.

And things took a turn for the worse on 38 minutes, as Richard Thompson put the finishing touch to a superb pass from Richard Daykin.

Five minutes after the break Northallerton made it 3-0 in controversial circumstances.

Thompson appeared to be yards offside, but play was waved on, and when Daniel Gray felled the player a hotly-disputed penalty was awarded.

Ian Smurthwaite stepped up to despatch the spot-kick and make it 3-0.

Hebburn refused to give up, and Anthony Myers had an effort cleared off the line, while Gray also went close.

But it was to be one of those nights for Town, who will be hoping to bounce back when they play Brandon United on Saturday.

* In the Wearside League, Jarrow lost 1-0 last night to Belford House.
