The Roofers ground out a point at Belle Vue in a game that could have went either way before the visitors weathered a late storm on goal.

But the big news was still to come, with Roofing announcing after the game that they had signed prolific forward Mackay from their rivals.

Mackay is Consett’s all-time leading goalscorer, having been with the Steelmen for more than a decade both sides of a spell in the Football League with Hartlepool United.

Roofing boss Richie McLoughlin said: “Michael’s a player I’ve long admired and had my eye on for a long time – he’s a proper goalscorer.”

His goals will hopefully come in handy for McLoughlin, especially after last night’s game ended in a goalless draw.

Roofing keeper Dan Regan was in action early on pulling off a fine low save with his feet from Dan Hawkins.

Consett then fashioned another chance when Luke Sullivan played in Michael Sweet but the forward could only drill his shot wide of the post.

Just after the restart, Roofing had a great chance to take the lead but from Lee Hamilton’s flick on, Michael Coghlan blazed over the bar.

James Fairley then surged forward from halfway, beating the defence with a mazy dribble before smacking the post with a shot and the rebound just eluding Hamilton.

With the minutes ticking over, the South Tynesiders owed their point to a smart save from Regan when the keeper surged to the edge of his box to thwart Hawkins.
