With their last two games postponed due to waterlogged pitches, there was a risk of Roofing opening the game with a degree of rustiness but took the lead on 14 minutes as Michael Mackay’s cross from the left evaded everyone in the visiting area and fell to Chow, whose diving header flew into the back of the net from around two yards out.

The visitors levelled just eight minutes later after Da Viega’s free-kick on the edge of the area was deflected over the Roofing wall and fell to Thomas Weedon at the far post who was able to guide the ball into the back of the net.

Mackay got a goal of his own on 24 minutes after a defence splitting pass allowed the former Consett man to collect the ball on the corner of the penalty area and send a delightfully struck ball looping into the top corner.

On 31 minutes, Anth Myers cleared from a corner and his long ball was collected by Mackay who cut into the edge of the penalty area and sent a powerful shot into the back of the net.

There was much debate between officials and players as to whether or not the ball had gone into the back of the net but at the end of two laborious minutes of discussion, the goal was allowed to stand.

Two minutes before the half time whistle, Chow got his second of the game after man of the match Robbie Williamson’s deep cross from the right was headed high into the back of the net by the evergreen striker.

Durham never really got into the second half and Roofing dominated – with Paul Chow grabbing his third and the hosts’ fifth on 78 minute after a James Fairley run down the middle ended with an unselfish ball to Mackay on the edge of the area whose shot was parried to the onrushing Chow who netted neatly into the bottom corner.

The defeat leaves the Citizens third-bottom and with only five games to play they are nine points adrift of West Auckland Town.

Whitley Bay are not mathematically safe but they are unlikely to be dragged into the relegation battle.

Despite Adam Shanks rifling a first-half hat-trick, they lost 5-3 to Dunston UTS whose matchwinners were Malcolm Morien (2), Aristote Guerin, James Luccock and Steve Bowey.
