Sima to receive trophy
SIMONSIDE will receive the Durham Alliance championship trophy before their final game of a long season tonight.
Gordon Diamond's side have enjoyed a hugely successful campaign, finally securing the title on Wednesday night with an 8-1 thumping of Wheatley Hill.
It means they can relax and enjoy the celebrations when they host Shildon tonight after a double triumph.
At one point, Sima were on course for a quadruple, but cup final defeats in the Washington Aged People's Trophy and the League Cup meant they had to settle for just the Clem Smith Bowl and the league championship.
A hectic run-in – with Sima twice having to play league games 18 hours after a cup final or semi-final – threatened to derail their charge to the title, but Diamond's men showed they are by far the best side in the league.
Sean Flood (4) and Shaun Edwards (2) bagged goals against Wheatley Hill, along with strikes by Steven Graham and Owen Gibson.
Another side who have had to endure a hectic schedule is JARROW, who are nearing the end of their Wearside League campaign.
They travel to Cleator Moor in their penultimate game, having had to cope with 17 league games in eight weeks, plus a semi-final and a final.
Despite this, Dave Bell's side have picked up 28 points from their last 15 games to secure a top-five finish.
Bell said: "I must give huge credit to the lads, who have performed exceptionally to pick up this amount of points, taking into account the volume of games."
Jarrow are missing Danny McGinley, Craig Armstrong, Peter Kane, Gary Rogers, Marc Brocklehurst and Peter Kirkham, while Tony Orr will deputise in goal for Gary Rogers, who cannot play through illness.
