United still looking for settled side

SHIELDS United have a break from Northern Alliance Division One duty when they entertain Gosforth Bohemians in the first round of the Division Cup.

United have a number of players injured or unavailable, with Kyle Yorston recovering from flu, and Gary Spottiswood, Phil Enlund and Jonny Gage all missing due to work.

On-loan Michael Alexander will continue up front with Jack Lawton, who this week rejected the chance to join league leaders Rutherford.

Assistant manager Wess Brown said: "Jack's been excellent for us, as has Michael.

"Although Michael is still searching for his first goal, his workrate has been excellent, and I am confident that first goal for the club is around the corner.

"Our biggest problem this season is in the 26 games we have played, including pre-season, we have not had the same team out twice.

"Last season when we were promoted we had a settled squad - this year we haven't.

"Last week we had two under-18s step up and they were top class.

"Our under-18s manager Warren Brown has done wonders, but we can't be reliant on those lads yet.

"They need to be slowly introduced to this level, and at the moment we can't do that."
