Wight-hot Mariners up to fourth
SOUTH Shields won their fifth consecutive league game 2-0 at Horden last night, to climb to fourth in the Northern League First Division.
Mariners keeper Niki Lawson did well to save from Kevin Devine as the hosts started brightly.
The home team also went close through Stuart Brightwell, and again through Devine.
Shields hit back on 20 minutes, as Jonny Wightman's shot was tipped over by Horden keeper James Winter.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Horden came very close to opening the scoring, but Chris Pearson was denied by a superb save by Lawson.
Shields instantly responded, Simon Fitzpatrick playing the ball to Craig Ellison wide on the left, who in turn crossed the ball for Jonny Wightman, who made no mistake, firing the ball past Winter.
Within a minute Shields doubled their advantage, and once again Ellison was instrumental, releasing Craig Armstrong on the right.
Armstrong played the ball to Stephen Ramsey, who shrugged off the attentions of a defender before rifling the ball into the corner of the net.
Shields started the second half on the front foot, and twice went close through Wightman in the opening stages.
The visitors then had to endure a 10-minute spell of pressure as Horden pressed them back looking to reduce the arrears, but a stout rearguard action maintained the two-goal advantage.
Shields had chances to increase their lead, but some very good goalkeeping from Winter kept them at bay.
In the last action of the game, Wightman found Perry in space, but a superb save by Winter denied him his first goal of the season.
Shields werwe well worth their three points, and now stand fourth in the league with the same number of points they won in the whole of last season.
The Mariners' next game is on Saturday, when they entertain Bishop Auckland at Filtrona Park.
