Local athletes face Cumbrian trip

JARROW and Hebburn AC and South Shields Harriers, combined with Birtley AC, travel to Carlisle tomorrow for their Northern East Three fixture at the Sheepmount Stadium.

Jarrow's challenge will be spearheaded by under-20 juniors James Lovatt, Scott Keeling, Liam Johnston and Greg Ritchie, who are set to pile up the points in several events.

Lovatt should succeed in the 100m and 200m, while Keeling could win the 400m. Johnston and Ritchie go for the 800m, 1500m and 5000m races.

In the B races, James Andrew is also likely to achieve a sprint double. Caitlin Lloyd races in the 1500m and 3000m events, and another high-points tally looks probable.

Paul Bartlett and Craig Errington return to the Shields club after a lengthy absence, and with Philip Pitt, Lee Henry and Phil McCluskey, they are strong in the sprinting section and form powerful 4x100m and 4x 400m relay squads.

Luke Adams and Chris Muir contest the 800, 1500 and 5000m events going for maximum points.

Alex Turbit should win the javelin, and she could also finish first in the 400m hurdles. Jon Snowden is back for the javelin, and should also be prominent in the 110m hurdles.

Scottish 3000m champion Tracy Laws, of Chester-le-Street AC, again joins Birtley as a second claim member for the summer, and starts favourite to win the 1500 and 3000m events.

Host club Border Harriers B, with no British Premier League fixture, will have many of their internationals on the second team, and will start favourites.

The hammer opens the meeting at 11 am ,with the senior men's 400m starting the track events at 1pm.

On Sunday, the South Tyneside clubs are in opposition again in their McCain's Young Athletes Northern One East fixture at Darlington.

Jarrow are strong in all three age groups of under-13, 15 and 17, with Rhys Garricks going for a sprint double in the under-17 boys 100m and 200m.

Shaun Barrass, Matthew Fearn and George Lowry provide a formidable middle distance trio in the under-17 category.

Charmaine Porter, Abigail Smith, Charlotte Pepper, Katie Corner and Amy Hutchinson are poised to gain a big points total in the under-17 section.

Emma Johnson is eyeing a long jump and 70m hurdles double in the under-13 section.

Alex Bainbridge will attempt to continue her run of high jump victories in the under-15 events, and Lucy Mulvain and Lucy Turner also should gain full points in the 75m hurdles, 100m and 200m.

Conor Deacon chases a 100m and 200m double in the under-15 boys races for the Shields club.

Luke Clark goes for the under-15 boys title, while David Wakefield moves up to the under-17 age group and contests the 800m and 1500m.

Michael Todd competes in the under-15 boys 400m. The hammer starts the action at 11am in the Eastlands Stadium, with the under-17 boys 400m hurdles opening the track programme at 1pm.
