Mixed terrain race set for record entry
SOUTH Shields Harriers Sand Dancer 10km Mixed Terrain Race ón Sunday is set for a record entry.
Supported again by Arndale Sports and Nutrients Ltd, a generous prize list for senior and veterans men and women has attracted runners from most areas of the region.
Liam Johnston, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, and his former team-mate Luke Adams, now at the Shields club, should be involved in the chase for the individual title.
Rob Hand, of Durham City AC, could be one of the principals, while Shields's Chris Muir – second in 2008 – is gradually returning to form.
Mike Jones, also from the Shields club, goes for the over-45 title.
South Tyneside's Claire Simpson returns to action in a strong women's field, which includes defending champion Sonia Morley, and 2007 winner Louise Noble.
Heaton's Jo Zoppi will also be challenging for the title.
Shields' George Arthur goes for the veterans over-40 title, and with Paul Bainbridge and Nick Atkinson in good form, the home team could be in with a chance of of the prizes with four to count.
With the North Eastern Veterans Championships incorporated, the race starting on the promenade behind Ghandi's Temple takes in two laps of a scenic route over the coastal paths finishing in Gypsies Green Stadium.
A two-mile Fun Run at 10.30am preceeds the main event, which goes off at 11am. Entries cost 8, and will be taken on the day.
Graeme Taylor, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished ninth in a huge field of 2,000 in the North Tyneside 10km Road Race, recording a time of 33.24.
Jarrow's Michael Bunn was third veteran over-50 in 39.39
Shields's Bob Balmer finished second over-65, and Dave Whitmore was second over-70.
Paul Bainbridge, from South Shields Harriers, was third in the Sunderland 5km Park Run at Silksworth.
Birtley's Liam Taylor won in 17.21, 11 seconds ahead of Sunderland's Tim Field with Bainbridge clocking 18.14. Shields's Linda Bone was first in the women's race in 24.16.
