Hebburn’s Christopher Parr storms to new record for South Shields 5km

Hebburn’s Christopher Parr stormed to a new record in the South Shields 5km race at Temple Park in midweek.

Parr moved clear from the gun on the winding paths and opened up a winning margin of 34 seconds to Crook AC’s junior international Markim Lonsdale with a fast time of 14:50.

Elaine Leslie, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished a prominent sixth and first woman in 20:08 with her daughter Jessica, aged 15, seventh in 20:09.and first under 17.

Jarrow and Hebburn AC finished a creditable eighth from 56 teams in the North of England Cross Country Relay Championships at Sheffield.

Alex Sneddon was eighth on the opening leg of 3.2 km in the senior women’s race with 12:12.

Angela McGurk dropped four positions to 12th on the second circuit in 13:49 but Georgia Campbell regained the places into eighth on the final lap with 12:32.

Birtley’s trio gained the bronze medals with Sunderland’s Sophie Burnett recording 11:59. Lincoln Wellington were champions.

David Wakefield, from South Shields Harriers, finished fourth in a field of 322 for the Run Northumberland Castles Bamburgh Half Marathon.

Conrad Franks, of Gateshead, was first in 73:32 from Finn Brodie of Tyne Bridge with Wakefield first veteran over 45 in 80:28.

George Arthur, also from the Shields club, finished 14th in 84:21 and first over 50. Daren Lough was 78th in 1:43,01.

The Newcastle Marathon takes place on Sunday on the Town Moor. Runners compete over five flat laps from a 10am start.

Park Runs continue on Saturday at South Shields, Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, Whitley Bay, Chester le Street and Durham. All races are over 5km at 9.00 am.
