Nelson leaves it late for Roofers

JARROW Roofing kept their promotion bid on track after a narrow win in an eventful game at Newton Aycliffe.

Richie McLoughlin's side stay in second spot in the Northern League Division Two table after edging to a 2-1 victory.

But they had to do it the hard way, and left it late once again before claiming all three points.

Craig Nelson – the hat-trick hero in the 3-0 midweek win over Thornaby – was again the man to thank as his late strike kept the pressure on leaders Sunderland RCA.

It hadn't looked good for Roofing after just five minutes when Chris Hepple was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle, leaving the visitors to play for 85 minutes with just 10 men.

That didn't stop them from pressing, however, and they could have opened the scoring on 11 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, but Kevin Davison saw his spot-kick saved.

Davison was soon to make amends, however, atoning for his miss by firing Roofing into the lead midway through the first period.

And things got better for the Roofers before the interval when their numerical disadvantage was wiped out as Aycliffe had a player sent off.

However, the home side continued to press, and midway through the second half they equalised through Dan Mellanby.

That looked like it would be enough to earn them a point, but with just six minutes remaining Nelson, pictured, fired home to give Roofing the victory.
