Fans called for McClaren's dismissal after the weekends 3-1 home defeat to Bournemouth.

And United managing director Lee Charnley held discussions over McClaren's future with board members Graham Carr and Bob Moncur yesterday.

Charnley and Moncur were pictured at Central Station boarding a train to York for the meeting.

However, the talks did not reach a final conclusion and the message from the club, which is second-bottom of the Premier League and a point adrift of safety, was that it was "business as usual" today.

But McClaren could still go this week, and bookmakers have slashed the odds on McClaren becoming the league's next managerial casualty.

In the meantime, the 54-year-old must start preparations for the club's next fixture against Leicester City on Monday night knowing he might not be in the dugout at the King Power Stadium.

After the Bournemouth game, McClaren vowed to fight on as head coach.

Asked if he would quit, McClaren said: "No way. That’s for other people to decide.

"I don’t do that. I have enough experience. I’ve been through this, with chants like there has been, quite a few times. That’s the perils of being a manager, and especially of this team, this season."
