The Newcastle United winger has a release clause in the contract he signed in January when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur.

And a number of Premier League clubs are weighing up moves for Townsend, who narrowly missed out on a place in England's 23-man squad for Euro 2016 despite hitting form in the latter part of last season.

Liverpool and Man City have today been linked with moves for Townsend, who is also said to be a target for Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez wants to keep Townsend at St James's Park, but, because of the clause in his deal, Benitez and United are powerless to stop him leaving if the clause, reportedly set at £10.5million, is triggered.

The 24-year-old, however, has given no indication, up to now, that he wants to leave the relegated club.

And Townsend hailed Benitez's decision to stay at Newcastle last month.

"It was fantastic news,” said Townsend. “Obviously, it’s no secret how well the manager did towards the end of last season, how well he got us playing and also how he got me playing well as well and getting me back to the form I’ve shown.

“I’m delighted he’s signed on for the next three years.”
