FABRICIO Coloccini’s contribution to Newcastle United’s remarkable season was recognised by the Professional Footballers’ Association.
The club’s captain was last night named in its Premier League team of the year
Coloccini was handed the skipper’s armband last summer in the wake of Kevin Nolan’s departure to West Ham United.
It was a tough act to follow, Nolan having led Newcastle back to the Premier League and ended last season as leading scorer with 12 goals.
However, the 30-year-old has been hugely influential on and off the field this term.
And Coloccini was again outstanding as United beat Stoke City 3-0 on Saturday.
It was the club’s sixth successive victory, with Newcastle having kept five clean sheets in a run which has taken them into the Premier League’s top four, and Europe.
Arsenal’s Robin van Persie was named the PFA’s player of the year.
PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM OF THE YEAR: Joe Hart (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Vincent Kompany (Man City), Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle), Leighton Baines (Everton), David Silva (Man City), Yaya Toure (Man City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd).
