The Magpies are looking to add at least one more striker to their squad this summer as boss Rafa Benitez plots an immediate return to the Premier League.

Grigg is on Newcastle’s radar after an excellent season in League One, where he bagged 28 goals as Wigan stormed to the title.

The 24-year-old’s form earned him a place in Northern Ireland’s Euro 16 squad.

But Wigan have warned potential suitors that the striker isn’t for sale as they look for Grigg to fire them back into the Premier League.

The frontman still has two years left on his contract, having joined the Latics last summer in a £900,000 move from Brentford, and is happy at Wigan under the management of former Newcastle defender Gary Caldwell, who has set his side up to supply the striker.

And sources in the North West say it would take a huge offer to prise Grigg away from the DW Stadium.

Grigg isn’t at the top of Benitez’s wishlist, with the Toon boss looking to add more experience to his strikeforce to supplement the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez.

But United will continue to monitor his progress having been alerted to his form after keeping tabs on Adam Armstrong during his loan spell in League One with Coventry.

Grigg finished as top scorer in the third tier last season, having netted 22 times the previous campaign while on loan at MK Dons.

His form resulted in Wigan fans adopting a terrace chant ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’, a version of which bizarrely entered the top 10 of the UK Charts this week.

Grigg didn’t get on in Northern Ireland’s 1-0 defeat against Poland on Sunday, and again was an unused substitute in last night’s shock 2-0 success against Ukraine.
