The defender was promised a new deal last summer when he took the No 3 jersey previously worn by David Santon.

And Dummett’s improved contract is expected to be agreed before he heads to Euro 2016 with Wales.

The 24-year-old signed a long-term deal in late 2013, which United revealed at the time they had the option of extending to up to six years.

But Dummett’s next contract will reflect his status as the club’s first-choice left-back.

The Newcastle-born player recently returned from a hamstring injury to boost Rafa Benitez’s defensive options ahead of the relegation run-in.

Dummett, also able to play at centre-half, had loan spells at Gateshead and St Mirren before breaking into the first team at United.

He has made 73 appearances and scored three goals for his boyhood club.
