And the talented 18-year-old is in the club’s 10-man squad for next month’s HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens tournament in Hong Kong.

“It’s great that the club want to offer you an extra year,” said Longstaff.

“It shows that they see something in you, which gives you a little lift as a player.

“With the likes of Peter and Ben (Dawson, professional development phase coach), if they see something in you, it makes you feel good and should make you play better.

“But we’ve probably let them down this year with our performances and results.

“The things they do behind the scenes for us, and the physios, sports scientists ... they do everything for you.

“We haven’t really repaid them this season, which is disappointing.”

While a depleted and injury-hit Under-21 side had a frustrating season, Longstaff felt he improved as a player.

Asked if he felt he had made progress, he said: “Personally, I am (improving), but it’s more about what the team does and we’ve lost a lot of games.

“You just try to play well and make sure you’re one of the bright sparks in the game or our team.

“It’s been pretty hard all year with us not winning many games.

“We’ve played well in a lot of games, but not got the results.”

United’s Under-21 Premier League campaign ended with a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this month.

Longstaff said: “It was really disappointing, especially considering where they are in the league.

“We thought it was a great chance to end the season on a high and try to show everyone was haven’t been this poor all season.

“The Academy and Under-21s want to give the club a lift.”
