Jamaal Lascelles caused a stir over the weekend with his comments in the aftermath of Newcastle United's crushing 3-1 defeat at Southampton.

The young defender was one of only two players to come out and speak to the media after the defeat, which leaves United on the brink of relegation.

The 22-year-old – who only has a handful of Premier League games under his belt – spoke with maturity and passion, and pulled no punches on the attitude of some members of the squad.

He said: “We need more heart, we need more desire.

“We need bigger characters on the pitch, players who care and who are going to get after each other.”

Lascelles’ interview was largely well received by fans on social media. Here’s a selection of comments on Twitter:

NUFC Online: While some feel Lascelles comments yesterday were harsh, he was being brutally honest. We have the ability but lack commitment and heart.

The Spectator’s View: However raw he might be, I’ve really taken a shining to Lascelles over the past few months. Top professional and a credit to the #nufc squad

NUFC 360: Jonjo Shelvey, stand-in captain, yet again refused to address the media today and that’s why it was Lascelles who did the talking. #NUFC

‏@RobIIINUFC: Lascelles, the 22 year old bloke who has played 12 games for us is trying to get these guys who have played in world cups to wake up.

Lee Jones: After Saturday’s performance and watching his interview, id be tempted to give Lascelles the captains armband.

Matty Hart: Good to see Lascelles tearing into this #NUFC side. Hope he’s a regular next season along with Mbemba at cb.

‏@peterat50: make Jamaal Lascelles captain and sack the rest for gross misconduct

@AndyP1892: There’s something I really like Lascelles. Could be crucial if we do go down...which looks likely.

‏@bahnzee: Jamaal Lascelles telling comments fall on the sloping shoulders of those players already planning their escape from #NUFC

Olly Scholes: If you are criticising Lascelles for not standing by his teammates then you are part of the problem. first name on teamsheet for those words

‏@poggy27: Lascelles interview.... Was like listening to a 13year old speak when his mum asks how his exam went and he didn’t revise!

@Mitrology: Jamaal Lascelles for captain in the championship, the mans got more of a voice then anyone else #NUFC

‏@TheTallLankyOne: Why is Lascelles facing the media and not our senior players? Cowards on and off the pitch

@MKell07: Nowt harsh about Lascelles comments. He cares. Shame 7 or 8 other first team players dont. Some absolute poison in that dressing room. #NUFC

@grahamcrosby: While I respect Lascelles’ comments, I don’t subscribe to the opinion that all of a sudden he’s the saviour. #nufc

@tfeditor1892: Astonishing comments from Lascelles - basically accusing his team-mates of not trying

@TheToonNetwork: All very noble of Lascelles to say that but when called upon this season he’s been found wanting. Certainly not Premier League quality
