Nolan's pride at skippering United

KEVIN Nolan has told of his pride at leading Newcastle United into battle.

And there will be few bigger tussles this season than tomorrow's Tees-Tyne derby.

Leading scorer Nolan – who captained Chris Hughton's side to a 6-1 win over Barnsley last Saturday – is expected to keep the armband, with skipper Alan Smith likely to miss out with an ankle problem.

The 27-year-old – who captained former club Bolton Wanderers for four years – believes the honour brings out of the best of him, and Nolan is ready and willing to lead Hughton's side out against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

"It was fantastic when Chris pulled me in and told me – it was a massive honour," Nolan told the Gazette.

"I captained Bolton in probably the most successful years of the club ever – I did that for four years.

"That was always a huge honour, but when I came here it wasn't something I was looking at.

"I just wanted to come and produce my best, and give Newcastle fans what Bolton fans have seen over the years.

"I've got a lot to live up to, and I know I've got to do better, but the captain's armband is always nice, and it gives a huge sense of pride.

"You're not only leading out 10 lads. We've got a great squad here with great staff, and 50,000 fans."

Nolan struck his 13th goal of the season against Barnsley, the strike seeing him equal his career-best goal tally at Bolton.

"Thirteen goals is absolutely fantastic, and hopefully I can push on and get a couple more goals from now to the end of the season to help the team," added Nolan.
