Ace Lovatt is leading quintet's challenge

JAMES Lovatt leads the challenge from Jarrow and Hebburn AC as a quintet of young athletes take part in the North of England Under-15 and Under-17 Track and Field Championships at Gateshead this weekend, writes BRIAN KIRKLEY.

Lovatt, the northern indoors 60m champion, is currently third in the rankings for the Under-17 boys' 100m, and faces competition from athletes representing Lancashire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Cumbria.

Matthew Fearn goes for the 1500m steeplechase, with Shaun Barras racing in the 3,000m over 7.5 laps.

Katie Corner goes in the Under-17 girls' 80m, while Rhys Garricks goes for the Under-15 boys' 100m title.

Garricks leads the South Tyneside charge at 11.20am tomorrow, with the Under-17 boys' 400m hurdles opening the programme at 11am.

Chris McDonald held off Ben Foster to win the Prinsky Cup in South Shields Harriers's annual 5.5-mile race.

Over the course, starting at Trow Rocks and along the promenade, climbing to The Leas before returning from the Velvet Beds, the pair contested the lead, with Paul Bainbridge and Paul Doxford in close attendance.

However, into the final half- mile, McDonald gained command and entered the finishing stages on the Gypsies Green track 100 yards ahead of Foster. Bainbridge prevailed over Doxford to claim third position.

Teesdale AC promote their Raby Castle 10k road race at Staindrop on Sunday.

More than 60 runners are set to contest the event over two laps of a scenic route through the grounds of Lord Barnard's estate from 11.15am.

Bob Balmer, from South Shields Harriers, finished first in the over-65 section of the recent Pier to Pier race with 54.47.

Malcolm Stephenson was third in 58.06, while Rachel Lowther, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, was 14th in the women's race in 53.21.

Vicky Thompson was 18th in 55.16, and third over-35. Cairine Chardley finished in 59.00, with Michelle Hartley recording 59.53. Marie Marshall was fifth over-40 in 61.38.
