Lovatt strikes at the double again!
JARROW and Hebburn AC athlete James Lovatt enjoyed a double success at the Northern League UK Young Athletes meeting at Carlisle on Sunday.
The North Eastern champion was in imperious form in the sprints.
Lovatt surged clear of Border's Alex Thompson with 11.6 in the 100m and clocked 23.9 in the 200m with Jon Davies of Sunderland trailing behind. Jarrow's Alex Wood was second in the B 100m in 12.7.
South Shields Harriers athlete Sam Preston made his debut at the meet, and finished fifth in the under-17 boys' 400m in 61.8.
Rhys Garricks was impressive in the under-15 boys' 100m, winning in 12.6 ahead of Border's Peter Weightman, and he surged to a double in the 200m in 25.1, with Shields's Ryan Charles fifth in 35.5.
Nick Wood achieved a hat-trick in the under-15 boys category, winning the 80m hurdles in 12.7 and the 100m in 12.9 and 200m in 25.00.
Matthew Fearn won the B 80m hurdles in 13.8, and finished second in both the shot with 6.35m, and the long jump, with 4.65m, where Charles was seventh with 2.98m.
Shaun Barras won the B 1500m in 4:43.5, with George Lowery second in the A race in 4:38.
Mark Gibson reeled off a three-timer in the under-17s with 1.68m in the high jump, 5.11 for the long jump and 24.4 in the B 200m.
Andrew Harle also gained three wins in the javelin with 43.25m, 100m hurdles in 16.0 and B long jump with 5.24m. Greg Ritchie made a bold effort in the under-17 1500m, contesting the lead with Matthew Grieves of Border to the final straight.
However, Grieves edged in front to win in 4:26.2, with Ritchie recording 4:28.3.
Marc Newby won the javelin with 14.43m, third in the 400m in 63.9, and fourth in the 800m in 2:25.3. Alex Shepherd, also in the under-15 age group, was third in the B long jump with 3.46m, and B 800m in 2:41.5. Lawrence McCourt finished second in the under-17 steeple chase in 6:12.9, and B 1500m in 4:54.8. Daniel Coutakis was second in the shot with 10.09m, and third in the B 400m in 56.2.
Stephanie Addison, 11, won the under-13 girls 75m in 11.2 – a half second clear of Gateshead's Emma Old – and was second in the 150m in a personal best of 21.8.
Chloe Ashley was first in the shot with 5.31m, and Lauren Kyle won the B event with 4.56m. Ashley won the 70m hurdles in 15.1, and the high jump with 1.20m. Alex Bainbridge won the B 70m hurdles in 15.6.
Samantha Doyle was second in the long jump with 3.99m, 75m hurdles in 11.5 and 150m in 23.5.
Frances Lowery was third in the B long jump with 3.08m, and fourth in the 800m in 3:35.4. Samantha Johnson was first in the 1200m in 4:44.1,
Alex Turbitt produced an excellent throw of 29.29 to win the under-17 girls javelin in a small squad from the Shields club, which was unable to figure in the team contest.
Abigail Smith followed her county triumph with success in the under-15 girls' 75m hurdles. Smith accelerated to a conclusive victory in 13.6 with Jarrow's Katie Corner third in 16.0.
Shields's Paige Howell won the B race in 14.3. Smith was fourth in the 200m in 29.3 with Corner seventh in 29.8.
Erin Rogers, of Jarrow, won an excellent under-15 girls' high jump from Rebecca Anderson, of Shields, clearing a winning height of 1.48m three centimetres ahead of Anderson. Rogers was also first in the B javelin
with 8.66m. Charlotte Potts was only five centimetres behind Border's
Natasha Wodley for second in the javelin with 24.95m.
Potts was second in the shot with 6.64m and Howell was fifth with 6.14m. Amy Hutchinson was second in the 100m in 14.4, with Zoe Slade fifth in the B race in 15.0, and Shields' Kate Collins seventh in 16.0.
Emma Milne was third in the under-17 girls' long jump with 3.74m and in the B 200m in 31.5. Danielle Humble finished third in the B 200m in 16.4 and fifth in the 200m in 34.7.
Katherine Bulmer won the shot with 9.08m, and was second in the discus with 21.0m and in the hammer with 18.25m.
Turbitt was third in the 300m in 48.3 with Jarrow's Victoria Addison fourth in 49.0. Addison finished second in the 800m in 2:36.5, with Shields's Sarah McDonald seventh in 2:53.2. Jonathon Doyle won the B 100m in 15.1, and the 200m in 32.5. He was also second in the B long jump with 3.42m.
Dominic Soulsby was second in the shot with 5.10m and third in the long jump with 3.49m.
Nicholas Coutakis was second in the high jump with 1.10m, and third in both the 100m in 15.8, and in the 200m in 32.8.
Liam O'Brien was third in the A 100m in 15.8, and sixth in the 800m in 2:55.3. Mark Bunn won the 1500m in 5:05.1.
Despite dominating the relays Jarrow's final total of 535 was 103 points down on Border.
Mike Jones, from South Shields Harriers, finished a prominent 12th in a huge field of more than 1,000 in the Pier to Pier Race on Sunday.
Over the 7.5 miles Durham's Rob Hand won in 38:40 with Jones fourth veteran over-45 with 41:01. Jarrow's Mark Hood was 30th in 43:16, and Shields's Peter Morgan was 48th and seventh over-50 in 44:36.
Graeme Thompson of Jarrow was 54th in 45:44 with Shields' Nick Whalen-Griffiths 70th in 46:09. Ben Foster from the Shields club was 84th in 46:42.
Jarrow's Rob Seaton junior was 89th in 47:07, with David Mills 103rd in 47:45.
Shields' Jon Balmer finished 107th in 47:53, with Jarrow's Craig Deacon 137th in 49:07, and Rob Seaton 156th in 49:09. Jim Ford was 196th in
51:53.
Vicki Thompson was 19th in the women's section in 54:44.
