McDonald's highway to success on the road

CHRIS McDonald, from South Shields Harriers, produced an impressive performance in taking second position in the CVS Highway Solutions Allendale Eight Miles Road Race on Saturday.

Bolton's Mark Swanwell won with a time of one minute 23 seconds, with McDonald recording 48:54.

Shields' Malcolm Stephenson was 52nd in the field of 131, finishing second veteran over-65 with 62:34. Ken McDonald was fourth in the same age group in 71:11, and Dave Whitmore was fifth in 72:12.

Former member of Jarrow and Hebburn AC Claire Jackson was first in the women's race in the home colours of Allen Valley AC, with 52:52.

James Lovatt and Katherine Bulmer achieved Athlete of the Match awards as Jarrow and Hebburn AC made late inroads into Harrogate's lead, before finishing only 10 points down in second during their Northern One UK Young Athletes meeting at Chester-le-Street on Sunday.

Lovatt gained his trophy for a fast 23.9 grade 1 standard in the under-15 boys 200m, finishing over 2.5 seconds clear of Darlington's Paul Clifford, and he completed a comprehensive double in the 100m, clocking 12.1.

Katherine heaved the shot an impressive 9.01m in the under-15 girls' section for the award in the field competitions.

Tristan Peel won the under-13 boys' 800m in a personal best time of 2:24.6, and gained his fastest 100m with second place in 14.0.

Ashleigh Stone won the long jump with 4.70m, and was inches off a double in the under-15 girls' 100m.

Natasha Teasdale finished clear with 13.0 in the under-13 girls' 70m hurdles, with Jemma Partins third in the 75m in 11.6.

Erin Rodgers was first in the under-15 girls' 800m in 2:41.5 and Katie Corner won the 75m hurdles in 13.3.

Janet Abladey was pipped by Kate Blakelock in the under-17 girls' 300m. Emily Coyne finished second in the 100m in 14.2, with Victoria Addison first in the B race in 14.7.

Jamie Butler won the under-15 boys' B 100m in 12.8. He was also first in the 200m in 25.3 and made it a hat-trick in the 80m hurdles in 13.5, with Tom Derbyshire first in the B event in 14.0.

Marc Newby won the 800m in 2:17.1, and gained a double in the high jump with 1.35m. Nick Wood finished second in both the 100m in 12.5 and in the 400m with 58.2.

James Andrew won the 200m in 24.4, and Daniel Coutakis won the B event in 25.3.

Jack Moore just failed to catch Tynedale's James Brown in the under-17 boys' 1500m, and Scott Keeling was second in the 400m.

Stephanie-Kate Crowell was first in the under-17 girls' shot with 6.20m, and the relay teams piled up the points, but Harrogate were first with 313.

Abigail Smith was in double-winning form, with 12.6 in the under-13 girls' 70m hurdles, and the shot with 5.74m.

Kayleigh Baxter finished fast in the under-15 girls' 100m, but Gateshead's Toni Wander hung on by a tenth of a second in 13.8.

India Sharpe won the under-17 girls' high jump with 1.55m. Alex Turbitt was third in the 100m in 14.2, and Ashleigh Wood first in the B race in the same tine, while Gemma Davison was also third in the 200m in 29.9.

Baxter, Rebecca Ellwood, Georgie Casey and Megan Hansen finished second to Birtley in the under-15 girls' 4 x 100m relay, but Shields were 29 points behind North Shields, with Birtley clear in first.
