Pair are prominent in relay

SOUTH Tyneside duo Claire Simpson and Kathryn Waugh featured prominently on the Chester-le-Street team which claimed silver in the National Women's Six Stage Road Relay Championships.

The Chester-le-Street team finished just three seconds behind winners Alershot in the event at Sutton Coldfield.

Simpson was 13th with 17.06 for the 5km opening leg, with Waugh running 17.24 on the third leg.

Former Jarrow star Angela Hunter recorded 18.19 on the Chester-le-Street B team, which finished 21st from the 49 teams.

Katie Corner, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, won the under-15 girls' 75m hurdles in Gateshead Harriers Cleveland Land Services Open Medal meeting at the International Stadium.

Corner recorded 13.24, with Abigail Smith, from South Shields Harriers, second in 13.28, and Jarrow's Natasha Teasdale third in 13.54.

Stephanie Addison, from the Jarrow club, finished first in the under-13 girls' high jump with 1.20m.

Michael Briggs, from the Shields club, won the senior men's long jump with 5.94m, while Jarrow's James Lovatt was seven hundredths of a second behind Middlesbrough's Bradley Stephenson with 11.71 in the under-17 boys' 100m.

Mark Gibson, also from Jarrow, was second in the 200m with 23.95, as Stephenson completed a double with 23.09.

Josh Abladey finished third in the senior 100m in 11.84, with Andrew Wilkinson, of Gateshead, first in 11.78.

James Andrew, an under-20 junior, finished third with 23.4, only a tenth of a second behind Wilkinson in the senior 200m, which was won by Gateshead's Jon Lowden in 23.1.

Katherine Bulmer was third in the under-17s girls' javelin with 24.42m and gained another bronze in the shot with 9.06m.

Hebburn's Damien Western finished fifth in Wallsend Harriers Rising Sun Mixed Terrain 9km race. Ryan Stephenson, from North Shields Ploytechnic, won in 25.50, with Western clocking 27.29.

Michael Bunn, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, finished 37th in a field of 461 for the Transped Blyth Valley 10km road race. Bunn was fourth over-45 with 38.24. Shields's George Arthur was 52nd in 39.19 and seventh over-45, with Jarrow's Michael Joyce 90th in 41.40, and 11th over-50.
