Ridgeon Nicks silver for Durham
NICK Ridgeon, from South Shields Harriers, captured the silver medal in the senior boys' decathlon.
And the result helped lead Durham to the gold in the Northern Regional Schools Combined Events Championships at Grimsby over the weekend.
Ridgeon included an excellent personal best shot put of 13.40m in his impressive total of 5,337 from the 10 events.
Alice Ramsey just missed the bronze medal with 3,355 in the senior girls' heptathlon, but with Laura Watt fifth with 3,277 and Michelle Bratton sixth on 3,208, the Shields trio were on the winning Durham team.
Nick Wood won the silver medal with 2,239 in the junior boys' pentathlon with Jamie Butler taking the bronze on 2,180.
Tom Derbyshire, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, was fourth with 4,145 in the intermediate boys' octathlon with Phillipe Goessen seventh on 3,618.
Shildon's Amy Fleming coached by Shields' Peter Tate achieved gold with 4,210 in the inter girls' octathlon, leading the team to gold.
Only the junior girls were out of the medals as five of the county teams qualified for the national finals in September.
Rhys Garricks completed a hat-trick in the Under-13 boys' section, as Jarrow and Hebburn AC finished third in the UK Young Athletes meeting at Monkton Stadium on Sunday.
Garrick won the Athlete of the Match award for his 200m in 27.5 and he finished ahead of Hallamshire's Louis Wildhall with 13.4 on the 100m before winning the high jump with 1.28m.
James Lovatt was second in the Under-15 boys' 100m a tenth of a second behind Hallamshire's Sam Barnsuey with 12.00. Simon Cox won the 800m in 2:15.3 and Shaun Barrass won the 1500m in 4:23.7.
Nick Wood won the 100m in 12.5 and the 80m hurdles in 12.8, while Jamie Butler was first in the discus with 23.99m.
Stephanie-Kate Crowell was second with 2:17.46 in the Under-17 girls' 800m with Morpeth's Laura Weightman first with 2:15.17.
Janet Abladey took the 200m with 27.5 and the 300m with 43.0. Katherine Bulmer won both the Under-15 girls' shot, with 8.54m and discus with 21.30m. Erin Rodgers finished first in the high jump with 1.40.
Scott Keeling won the Under-17 high jump with 1.65m and Natasha Teasdale was first in the Under-13 70m hurdles in 13.1.
Tristan Peel won the Under-13 100m in 14.1 and the shot with 4.67m, and Jessica Parkin also completed a double in the Under-13 75m in 12.0 and shot with 6.28m.
Emma Winter won the Under-17 shot with 6.43m and Eleanor Murray was first in the javelin with 17.02m.
Christopher Bunn was first in the Under-15 discus with 17.20m and Beth Kerrigan won the Under-17 B 70m hurdles in 13.5, as Jarrow finished with 294 points.
Abigail Smith surged to a hat-trick for South Shields Harriers in their UK Young Athletes meeting at Whitley Bay on Sunday.
The diminutive youngster prevailed in a photo-finish to the Under-13 girls' 150m from Tynedale's Pippa Greenwood with both athletes awarded the same time of 22.0.
However, in the 70m hurdles Smith opened up a five-metre gap over Tynedale's Gemma Brown. Smith completed her treble in the shot with 6.56m.
Georgie Casey was a resounding winner of the Under-15 girls' 70m hurdles in 14.5, but Kayleigh Baxter was third with 13.9 in the 100m.
India Sharpe won the Under-17 girls' high jump with 1.57m as Tynedale's Jenny Bradshaw failed three times at that height.
Sharpe looking for the English schools entry standard of 1.62m failed narrowly at 1.60m.
Jennie Ogilvie back from injuries, finished third in the Under-15 girls' shot with 6.12m and Kate Collins was also third in the B event with 4.94m.
